How to Get Your GED in Indiana: Cost, Free Classes and the 6 Steps

Good news: Indiana’s adult education classes are free, and so is its online class option for residents. One thing has changed, though: since July 2025, most people can’t take the GED online here. Here’s who can test, what it costs and every step.

Getting your GED in Indiana comes down to four tests. You take them one at a time, at a test center.

The catch? Indiana’s official pages don’t agree on the price, and online testing is suspended for almost everyone. This guide lays out both.

If it’s been years since school, that’s normal. You don’t need the whole plan today, only the next step.

Who can take the GED in Indiana

To take the GED in Indiana, you need to be 18, have lived in Indiana for at least 30 days, and have no high school diploma. GED.com’s Indiana page says “You must provide a government ID and be a resident of Indiana for at least 30 days.”

If your ID is from another state, bring proof of your Indiana address too, such as a lease, a utility or phone bill, or a bank statement.

DWD’s FAQ says you register in person at a testing office with one government-issued photo ID.

Under 18? At 16 or 17, you need an Exit Interview Form on file at the testing center before you test. It includes a written recommendation signed by your superintendent, principal or head of school, or a judge.

DWD notes that a superintendent or principal doesn’t have to recommend a student under 18, and no one under 16 can test.

No class or practice test is required before you test in person.

How much the GED costs in Indiana

GED.com’s Indiana page lists $45 a subject at a test center, so $180 for all four (checked October 2026). It lists $36 a subject online, but online testing is suspended for most people (more below).

Indiana’s Department of Workforce Development (DWD), which runs the state program, describes the cost differently. Its FAQ says “Testing costs are $144 or less, which includes all of the tests, test scoring, transcripts and diploma.” Ask your test center for the exact price when you register.

Free for HIP Plus members. If you’re an Anthem BlueCross BlueShield HIP Plus member, DWD says you can get free vouchers that cover the Indiana HSE test. Call Anthem Member Services at 1-866-408-6131, then bring the voucher to the testing center, which enters the code when you register.

Retakes cost less at a test center. If you don’t pass a subject, your retake costs $10, used within a year. GED Testing Service waives its $26 fee, so you pay only the test center’s $10. There’s no wait for your first two retakes, then a 60-day wait after a third try.

Can you take the GED online in Indiana?

For most people, no. DWD says “As of July 1, 2025, the online proctored High School Equivalency test is suspended in Indiana.”

The one exception is for students enrolled in an Indiana-approved adult education program who qualify for modified testing conditions that require testing at home.

GED.com’s online testing table still lists Indiana as limited, and GED.com’s Indiana page still mentions online testing. Go by DWD, the state agency, and plan to test at a test center.

If you do qualify for the exception, you’ll need a green GED Ready score from the last 60 days in each subject.

How to get your GED in Indiana, step by step

Step 1: Create your free GED.com account

You schedule your tests and see your scores at GED.com. Use an email address you’ll keep.

Step 2: Under 18? Get your Exit Interview Form on file

Ask your superintendent, principal or head of school for the written recommendation, and make sure the form reaches your testing center before test day.

Step 3: Check for a HIP Plus voucher

If you have Anthem HIP Plus, call Anthem Member Services at 1-866-408-6131 for your free voucher before you pay anything.

Step 4: Study for the four subjects

GED.com has free test previews for all four subjects, each about a quarter the length of the real test, and Indiana’s free classes are covered below. GED Ready, the official practice test, costs $7.99 a subject.

Math is the subject most people have left at the end. Our free GED math practice test is full length and timed, and practice by topic lets you work on one skill at a time.

Step 5: Register at a test center and pass your four tests

Each subject is scored from 100 to 200, and you need 145 or higher in all four. Scores usually post within 24 hours.

If you don’t pass a subject, you retake only that one.

Step 6: Order your Indiana diploma

When you pass all four, your diploma and transcript are handled by DiplomaSender. The section below explains how to get copies.

Free GED classes in Indiana

Indiana Adult Education classes are free, and Indiana Online Only (IOO) is fully state-funded and free to Indiana residents.

DWD’s locations page lists a provider for every county, with a map.

A class isn’t required. You can study on your own and register when you’re ready, although the one online testing exception is for adult education students.

Your Indiana diploma and transcript

Pass all four subjects and you earn Indiana’s High School Equivalency Diploma.

DWD’s FAQ says the testing cost includes your transcripts and diploma.

For copies later, DiplomaSender handles Indiana transcripts and diplomas. You order online with a credit or debit card.

Indiana offers both the GED and the HiSET, in English and Spanish, and large print, Braille and audio formats are available.
