GED by State: Your State’s Price, Rules and Guide

Every state sets its own GED price and rules, so what you read about one state may be wrong for yours. Color the map by price, online testing, age, residency, help paying or which test is offered, compare two states, then open your state’s guide.

Prices and rules checked October 13, 2026 against each state’s GED.com page.

Compare two states

Some states let you test without living there, and prices differ by up to $50 a subject. If you live near a state line, check both sides.

GED, HiSET or both?

Some states offer a second test, the HiSET, alongside the GED. Neither testing company publishes one list of who offers what. So we compared GED.com’s state table with HiSET.org’s state pages on October 14, 2026.

Of the 55 places on GED.com’s list, 28 offer only the GED and 25 offer both. Iowa and Maine offer only the HiSET. Color the map by “GED or HiSET” to see yours.

HiSET.org’s list still names New Jersey and West Virginia. But its own pages for New Jersey and West Virginia say the HiSET has ended there, so we count both as GED only.

PSI, which runs the HiSET, says it’s offered in “30 states and territories.” Our count covers only the places on GED.com’s list.

If your state offers both

Check which one is near you. Ask your local adult education program or test center which test it gives. In North Carolina, for example, not every community college offers both.

Check the rules on mixing scores. Massachusetts and Pennsylvania let you combine scores from both tests, and so do Michigan and North Carolina. California doesn’t allow it: all your subjects must come from one test.

Both tests count for federal student aid, as our GED vs high school diploma guide shows.

Frequently asked questions

Does every state offer the GED?

Almost every one. Iowa and Maine use a different test, the HiSET, instead. The other 53 (48 states, DC and four US territories) offer the GED.

Which states have free GED testing?

As of October 13, 2026, there’s no test fee at test centers in Connecticut, New York and West Virginia (Connecticut charges a $13 registration fee, but not to veterans or people under 21). 26 states and territories offer a voucher, discount, scholarship or other help with the fee, often while funding lasts.

Can I take the GED online in my state?

In most places, yes. 39 states and territories offer the online GED, and 8 more offer it with limits. Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, New York, West Virginia and Wyoming don’t offer it online. You also need a green GED Ready score from the last 60 days.

Can I take the GED in a different state?

It depends on the state where you want to test. 19 states and territories have no residency rule, 5 have none but add conditions, and 29 require you to live there or have an address there, sometimes for a set number of days. Color the map by residency, or compare two states, before you book.
