What’s on the TABE math test
TABE math has four levels: E, M, D and A. A short Locator test picks your level first. Every level has the same four areas with the same weights, and the skills inside them get harder from one level to the next.
| Area | Share at every level | In this set |
|---|---|---|
| Numbers and Operations | 27.5% | 7 |
| Algebraic Concepts | 27.5% | 7 |
| Measurement, Data, and Probability | 25% | 6 |
| Geometry | 20% | 5 |
Like the real test, the set mixes multiple choice with questions where you type in the number. TABE calls those gridded response.
Which levels this set fits
| Level | Skills from | This set |
|---|---|---|
| E | Grades 2 and 3 | Not covered |
| M | Grades 4 to 6 | Mostly not covered |
| D | Grades 6 to 8 | Mostly covered |
| A | High school | Partly covered |
Here’s why: Levels E and M test whole-number arithmetic, place value, time, money and measuring with tools. This set has none of that. At Levels D and A, a few skills have no questions here:
- Scatter plots, lines of fit, two-way tables and random samples
- Angle rules, transformations, and similar and congruent figures
- At Level A: radicals, rational exponents and exponential models
Bottom line: if the Locator puts you at Level D or A, this set is good practice. At Level E or M, start with TABE’s own sample questions for your level, linked below.
TABE 13&14 or TABE 11&12?
TABE 13&14 came out in 2025 (TABE history). The older TABE 11&12 lost its approval for federal adult education reporting in 2024, and its extra time to switch ended on June 30, 2026 (Federal Register). So check that your study material says 13&14.
What changed in math: all new questions, gridded-response questions next to multiple choice, the Desmos calculator, and the same 45 and 15 minutes at every level (what’s new in TABE 13&14).
When you can use a calculator
TABE 13&14 uses the on-screen Desmos calculator, on some parts only. DRC’s test directions (a copy posted by Erie Community College) allow none at Level E, and one in Part 2 only at Level M. Their schedule marks Part 1 of Level D and both parts of Level A with a scientific calculator.
This set keeps a calculator in the toolbar for every question, so work some of them by hand too.
TABE math vs GED math
TABE has no passing score. Adult education programs use your scale score and level to place you in a class and to track your progress (TABE scoring guide). The GED is the test you pass to earn a high school equivalency credential.
Level A reaches high school math, like the GED, so practice for one helps with the other. Some states pay for GED tests for students in adult education. Our free GED guide lists them.
